Kesha's 'Gag Order': A Raw and Vulnerable Journey Through Music

Published on 3 May 2023 at 14:00

Kesha's upcoming album, "Gag Order," is set to release on May 19th, and fans are eagerly anticipating its arrival. The album, produced by Rick Rubin, will be Kesha's first full-length album since her 2020 release, "High Road." In anticipation of the album's release, Kesha has dropped two lead singles, "Eat the Acid" and "Fine Line," both of which showcase a new side of the chart-topping artist.

"Eat the Acid" is a slow-burning, meditative track that Kesha wrote the night after a major spiritual and existential breakthrough. The introspective single was co-written alongside esteemed songwriters Stuart Crichton and mother Pebe Sebert via Zoom. The writing session marked Kesha’s launching pad for the album, which became her quarantine project in the midst of the global health crisis. The song is a testament to Kesha's growth as an artist and her willingness to explore new sounds and themes.

On the other hand, "Fine Line" is a deceptively atmospheric track that eschews percussion but pulls plenty of energy from its bruising synths and Kesha’s vocals, which build from a whisper to a snarl. The song is a check-in with Kesha after the past three-plus years of her legal battle against her alleged abuser Dr. Luke, whose label she’s still forced to release music under. The song is a powerful statement of resilience and strength, and it showcases Kesha's ability to channel her internal emotions through music.

As a pop/dance enthusiast, I crave the fun and catchy bops that Kesha has produced in the past. While I appreciate her exploration of a deeper side of herself, it doesn't resonate with me as much as her previous work. Nevertheless, I applaud her for taking risks and expressing herself in new ways.

Overall, "Gag Order" promises to be a vulnerable and introspective album that showcases Kesha's growth as an artist and her willingness to explore new sounds and themes. The album cover, which shows Kesha suffocating in a plastic bag, is a haunting image that speaks to the album's themes of suffocation and oppression. Fans are eagerly anticipating the album's release and are excited to see what Kesha has in store for them.
